Manual wheelchair recommendations for the individual with SCI require critical considerations to optimize functional outcomes and long term health. This all-day seminar provides comprehensive knowledge and skills for selecting appropriate manual wheelchairs and associated education and training. Participants will learn to compare and contrast various frame styles and configuration options to guide best selection for individual clients. Case examples will be used to illustrate applications and wheelchair propulsion. Skills training techniques will be demonstrated and hands- on interaction will improve confidence in providing optimal wheelchair equipment to individuals with SCI.

An Interdisciplinary Approach to Bowel and Bladder Management

Bowel and bladder management is an integral part of the treatment of the individual with SCI. This half day seminar will provide the audience with a comprehensive overview of the multidisciplinary approach to bowel and bladder management options, medications, establishment of appropriate bowel and bladder program, and education to patients and family members. Additional information will be provided related to therapeutic interventions and adaptive equipment used to enhance independence with bowel and bladder care.

Chronic Pain Management for Individuals with SCI: Classifications and Treatment Approaches
Wednesday, May 14

The need for effective classification and management of SCI-related pain is a major problem that challenges the interdisciplinary team who work with these individuals. A multitude of therapeutic options may be available but selecting those that best provide pain relief is the key to improving quality of life. This half day workshop, with presentations by a physician, therapist and psychologist, will describe current pain classifications in SCI as well as outline treatment options for best practice in pain management.

Objectives: Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Identify classification systems used for pain in SCI

  • Describe medical treatment options for neuropathic related pain in SCI.

  • Explore therapeutic techniques to prevent as well as treat common musculoskeletal causes of pain in SCI.
