John Santelli, MD, MPH, Professor and Chair of the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health at the School of Public Health at Columbia University, will examine “Abstinence-Only Education: Moral Triumph or Public Health Catastrophe?” Dr. Santelli will review the various critiques of abstinence-only education, including efficacy, scientific accuracy of commonly-used curricula, and the potential for harm to youth and to public health programs by withholding life-saving information.
David A. Kessler, MD, Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs at the University of California San Francisco, will discuss “Science vs. Politics: Women’s Health on the Frontline.” As Commissioner of the FDA from 1990 to 1997, Dr. Kessler acted to speed approval of new drugs and placed high priority on facilitating promising therapies for serious and life-threatening diseases. Dr. Kessler will examine the implications for women’s health of examples in recent history where politics interfered with the translation of science into public health policy.
