This course meets the California BRN’s requirements for furnishing Schedule II Controlled Substances and will focus on principles of pharmacology related to pharmacotherapeutic management of patients whose illness, injury or condition requires evaluation and treatment using Schedule II controlled substances. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles of Schedule II medications commonly used in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of common health care conditions will be included. In addition, legal requirements for furnishing controlled substances as well as principles related to patient-specific protocols for Schedule II and III controlled substances will be covered.

| Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to: |
- Identify the relationship of the natural history of illness, disease or injury, pathophysiology, and symptomatology to pharmacotherapeutic agents commonly used to treat patients with conditions requiring the use of Schedule II medications related to primary care.
- Be familiar with state laws and federal regulations pertaining to furnishing, dispensing, and administering controlled substances Schedule II through V medications.
- Identify components necessary for prescription writing for Schedule II through V medication consistent with Health and Safety and Pharmacy laws.
- Outline the required components of a furnishing standardized procedure or protocol for Schedule II and III controlled substance medications in a Patient-Specific Protocol in accordance with Business and Profession Code, Section 2836.1, including the clinician’s education, experience, and competence to furnish controlled substances.
- Describe ethical and legal standards and ramifications of prescribing controlled substances.

Common Schedule II drugs used in primary care, including pharmacokinetics and dynamics, mechanisms of action, clinical actions, dosing, adverse effects, drug interactions, risk of dependency/addiction, withdrawal, antagonists.
I. Stimulant Medications:
a. Methylphenidate-based including Ritalin, Concerta, Metadate, Focalin and Others.
b. Amphetamine-based including Dexedrine, Adderal and Others.
II. Opioid Narcotics for pain management, cough suppression, etc.
a. Morphine, Oxycodone, Fentanyl, Meperidine, Methadone, Codeine and Others.
Legal aspects of Prescribing Schedule II through V controlled substances:
a. Patient-specific protocols or standardized procedures specific to Schedule II and III drugs.
b. State laws & federal regulations pertaining to furnishing, dispensing & administering Schedule II through V controlled substances by NP’s.
c. Components of prescription writing for Schedule II-V drugs.
d. Ethical and legal standards and ramifications. |
